At the close of each school year Desert Oasis’ Senior students are invited on a “Senior Trip” to Disney Land in Anaheim California. This year the circumstances have changed.
Bridget Wright fought hard and continues the fight to allow students the privilege of their Senior Trip. Wright is an educator as well as the Student Council Director at Desert Oasis High School.
“There’s certain district regulations that we have to follow. And some of those things are we have to take the charter bus, it has to have a driver, we can’t rent cars to take you, we can’t get smaller buses and it has to be the giant coach bus with the bathroom in it,” said Wright. “It’s like the district regulations are preventing us from being able to get travel accommodations.”
Long-distance school trips require the reservation of a CCSD-approved charter bus. The Clark County School District Regulation states, “Out-of-District Travel Requests (CCF-145) must be approved prior to attending and for use in processing paperwork for registration fees and mileage allowances related to the event. Per diem, subsistence will not be paid for such travel.”
Due to the CCSD policies, it is highly unlikely that the senior trip will take place this year. With a lack of buses, there is very little that can done.
“Every single company has sold out. I’ve called like 13 companies, I’ve tried different dates, and I’m on three waitlists.” Wright expressed,” When I talked to the bus companies they said normally it’s not a problem. They don’t know why everybody just started booking their buses way earlier. There are a bunch of events happening, so I don’t know. I tried, I did try, and I’m still trying.”
Upon hearing the news it is expected for Seniors to be upset. Many Diamondbacks look forward to the end-of-year Disney trip.
Wright shared,“ Student Council Seniors were super upset. I’m assuming you’re very much in assumption that there’s going to be a lot of Seniors that are bummed, like super bummed that they’re not going to be able to go on that trip. There’s not a solution.”
Although Seniors won’t be invited to Disney Land this year, there are many other events Desert Oasis has to offer.
“We have our Senior events that we’re doing like Field Day, and Prom. But there’s nothing to replace going to Disney,” concluded Wright.
