The Chiefs have been named Super Bowl LVIII Champions, and are taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
This is the second Super Bowl win in a row for the Kansas City Team, and the first back-to-back Super Bowl win for a team in 20 years.
The game was very close, unlike most Super Bowls, with the score 10-3 in favor of the 49ers at halftime. By the 3rd quarter, the game was up 13-10. In the fourth quarter, the game was tied after the Chiefs kicked a field goal with only 3 seconds left in the game, tying up the score at 19-19.
With the game tied, the Super Bowl went into overtime for only the second time in the history of the game. The last time there was overtime in the Super Bowl was in 2017, during Super Bowl LI, where the New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime.
This was the first time the new postseason overtime rules were put into effect. The new rules are designed to allow both teams to gain possession of the ball and get a chance to score. The overtime period essentially starts a new game; the clock starts at fifteen minutes for each period, and each team regains their 3 time-outs.
While the 49ers earned a kickoff, bringing them up to 22 points, the possession switched to the Chiefs under the new rules, since each team is allowed to gain possession of the ball. The Chiefs ended up scoring a touchdown, and beating the 49ers 25-22.
While San Francisco’s team missed out on the Lombardi Trophy, they didn’t fail to prove just how talented they are. With a nearly perfect game from quarterback Brock Purdy, the Bay Area definitely got a game that they can be proud about.
After the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes received the title of MVP. “We are going to celebrate tonight,” said Mahomes, “but we are not done. We got a young team. We are going to keep this thing going.”
Travis Kelce, Chiefs tight end, only had one thing to say after the big win: “Viva Las Vegas!” Kelce faced backlash during the game after a fumble by Pacheco in the first quarter clearly struck a chord with Kelce. He could be seen approaching his coach, Andy Reid, and shoving him while seemingly yelling at him, too.
Nevermind the antics; overall, the Chiefs played an absolutely spectacular game much deserving of a Super Bowl title, with another spectacular performance from Mahomes, who left the Super Bowl with 66 rushing yards and an astonishing 333 passing yards, which is the most in Super Bowl history.
Another thing in Super bowl history: Super Bowl LVIII is now the most watched Super Bowl in the 58 years it’s been happening. While of course, the nail biting gameplay contributed to this, it’s largely in part to the Halftime show.
Usher, the famous R&B singer, headlined the Apple Music halftime show, and acquired 30 million households attention. After performing some of his biggest hits, like “Caught Up” and “Love in this Club”, he brought out other artists like H.E.R., Lil John, Ludacris, and Alicia Keys.
Keys and Usher performed their famous duet My Boo, after Keys made a grand entrance in a long, flowing red gown playing her song “Ain’t Got You” on the piano. Usher, known for his superior vocals and his incredible dancing, and recently completed his second residency in Las Vegas.
Overall, Super Bowl LVIII was a great success for the city of Las Vegas which is now going to be considered to be put in the rotation of cities for future Super Bowls to come.
