The Desert Oasis High School girls’ bowling team made history and took home their very first state championship.
On February 16, 2024, they went against Centennial High School, which happened to be 2nd overall. Throughout the whole match, there were ups and downs but D.O. managed to prevail and take the victory. They took 2037 pins overall, while Centennial had 1957.
Shantell Hunt, a senior player, shared her feelings about the significant win, expressing surprise and happiness.
“I felt surprised winning state,” says Hunt. “I went into the match very happy and just excited that my hard work throughout the season finally paid off.”
Hunt also explains how she felt as if her team deserved to win state.
“I feel like we all had to prove that our team deserved to win.” Hunt expresses. “We been through so much this season so I felt like this was something we had to do.” Desirae Hunt, Shantell’s younger sister, and a sophomore team member, also reflected on the win.
“It feels good winning state because I’d never thought we’d make it this far,” says Hunt. “I have 2 more years to try and do better, but I am grateful that I got to experience this with my sister who is graduating this year.”
Drue Ramos, another sophomore team member, described her initial nervousness during the match.
“I was nervous at first but after how we started the third game I think all the satisfaction and excitement came throughout,” says Ramos. “There was no pressure for me. I didn’t have anything to prove to anyone plus I was having fun basically the entire season so I was just happy to be there.”
The success of the Desert Oasis High School girls’ bowling team not only marked a significant achievement for the school but also showcased the determination and joy that defined their journey to the state championship.
