With the release of the new Amazon Original series, Fallout, a new pattern has formed in Hollywood. Series and movies based on video games are definitely in.
Fallout, based on the video game of the same name, is set in a futuristic version of Los Angeles and follows multiple characters through the fallout of a nuclear war in the United States.
Originally released in 1997, the video game has remained popular through multiple installments like Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas. Most of the installments are hinted at in the new TV show.
The series has eight episodes, each around an hour long, and has received incredible ratings. With names like Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell, it received a 93% score on rotten tomatoes with an 88% audience score.
The show-which has achieved notable success since its release on April 10th- follows multiple series based on video games to receive critical acclaim, like The Last of Us, an HBO original based on a video game of the same name. The show, starring Pedro Pascal, received much buzz and won prestigious awards- the show managed to bring home eight Emmys.
Shows based on beloved video games seem to be the latest Hollywood craze. Blockbuster movies are also being released, like Gran Turismo that hit theaters last August, and Five Nights at Freddys that debuted in October. Other movies based on video games are in development, such as Sonic The Hedgehog and even a Minecraft movie.
It’s easy to understand why movies like this are the latest trend- money is to be made with each adaptation. Each film based on a video game draws in its’ massive cult following to the theaters, and each show brings viewers and subscribers to streaming platforms. For instance, take the Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation, which made nearly $300 million at the box office, despite its corny comedy and largely mediocre reviews.
Fallout, however, is the latest and one of the most highly rated works based on a video game to be released in the past few years. In fact, the show was renewed for a second season only a week after its release on Amazon Prime Video.
Although there is currently no release date, Esquire reports that season 2 filming could begin as soon as this September.
