During the first week of school, administration presented a warm welcome for Desert Oasis students with grade level orientations on Wednesday the 14th, and Thursday the 15th.
Administration staff each presented a section of their presentation to focus on the importance of the new school year, new policies, and the new theme. Each section contained information regarding the vision of Desert Oasis, badges, and layout for the school year.
Kailen Martin, a Junior at Desert Oasis High School, explained, “the orientation today was super informative and gave everyone an insight on how this year is going to be a bit different. I think everything new that they are bringing to school this year will benefit us all in the long run.”
The vision for Desert Oasis is the Three E’s. The vision stands for Enrollable, Enlistable, and Employable. Enrollable allows students at DOHS to become, “Enrollable in a post-secondary school, whether it be a community college, university, or trade school,” the website stated, “Enlisted in one of the six branches of the United States military whether it be the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, or Space Force.” Finally, Employable so that students “may enter the workforce directly after graduation.”
When attending the orientation, students were asked to sit with their teacher assigned to their class period as they discussed the theme for the 2024-2025 school year. The theme for Desert Oasis this year is #LoveDO. It focuses on the love shared between peers, educators, and the school community. #LoveDO creates a loving environment that will be shared within the school to create a united class.
Another junior, Juliette Flores, at Desert Oasis stated, “the orientation today was very helpful especially for the new students just joining our school. The orientation went over a lot of the school’s policies and what we can do to better ourselves for the upcoming school year. I say it did help especially with knowing what’s acceptable here and who to go to if they have any trouble this year.”
As a school community some new policies have been enforced. Students are required to use their mandatory ID, that must be around their neck at all times, to enter the building, their class, and other school activities. If badges are not present when on-campus, students will need to purchase new ID’s for $5, however, if the mandatory lanyard is not also present, students will be charged an extra $3.
In previous years, seniors would receive a senior lanyard. However, because Clark County School District enforced a mandatory ID requirement, class of 2025 received the same lanyards, for now, as other classes. Instead, seniors can receive pins based on their achievements. After each achievement, a pin will be distributed to that student. Pins are meant to be placed on seniors’ lanyards for decoration. However, new information releases that senior lanyards will be distributed at a later date.
Desert Oasis High School has started the new school year by emphasizing community and future readiness through its grade level orientations. This helps prepare students for various paths after high school and stay on track during the rest of their academic years. Admin helps prepare students at Desert Oasis for #LoveDO to create a motivated and inclusive school environment for future and present students.
