John B and his friends can never catch a break!
The newest season of Outer Banks is the saddest. The series takes place in North Carolina where the island is divided by pogues and kooks. Pogues are the “poor” people of the island and kooks are the rich ones. John B and his friends have caught themselves in endless adventures of treasure hunting and betrayal and loss. What makes this season stand out is the twist and turns- adrenaline coursing through our veins.
There were many times where characters like Sarah had experienced life threatening situations, but since they are main characters, we never really worried about their deaths. Usually, the least important main character dies. Not this season.
Throughout the series JJ had always been suffering from family issues. His mother has never been around, his father is an alcoholic abuser, and his money keeps slipping from his fingertips. Although many people accuse Rudy’s (Actor of JJ) girlfriend to be the reason he’s leaving the show, there were many foreshadowing scenes of JJ’s death in the series, but were never really paid attention to.
A death followed by a birth subtly foreshadows JJ’s fate. We were introduced to Sarah’s pregnancy in episode 7. Each time a character is introduced an old one is removed.
We learn that Chandler Groff is JJ’s real father. There were many times in conversations Groff would carelessly point a knife at JJ, which happens to be how JJ dies. His father stabs him and twists the knife.
The last episode where the group is burying JJ’s body in Morocco. The group was silent from anger, Kie, always being the one trying to stop JJ from his attack plans, she suggested that if JJ were alive and it was one of them he wouldn’t just stand there, he’ll do something about it, “revenge.” And then, she stares into the camera like a maniac.
The ending leaves us wondering what could happen next season. Kiara is seeking revenge, and now Rafe and Sarah have reunited to work together. The emotional impact of JJ’s death will drive the group to fight back even harder. There’s still a lot to unpack from this season to determine how the next season will go.
