You can usually hear popular EDM artists on the radio with blended Pop and HipHop songs nowadays, but two centuries ago this wasn’t the case. Genres like Pop and HipHop have been extremely popular. Being a genre that almost everyone knows and enjoys, it can be an easy conversation starter and perfect for a party playlist. But a runner up in “newer” genres, EDM (Electronic Dance Music), has been gaining popularity especially through mixing with these popular mainstream genres.

EDM has been very unappreciated by society, having been started around the mid 1980’s whereas Pop started in the mid 1950’s and HipHop in the 1970’s. Though, in recent years, producers and singers have been incorporating aspects from EDM into Pop, Pop into EDM, and even HipHop into EDM.

Artists like Disclosure and The Chainsmokers are prime examples of early mixing of EDM to Pop genres. Disclosure combines late Dance/House with sort of Pop vocals to create a more chill party mood. The Chainsmokers uses multiple aspects from EDM including the intro to rise to drop and so on to mix their Pop vocals. Overall Pop seems to be becoming a whole EDM sub genre, as more producers and singers hop on this trend.

There are also some great EDM songs included with HipHop effects and even some fire vocals. Artists like Freddie Dredd and Vindata use their rap vocals for different subgenres in EDM to create maybe a heavy, hard hitting track or even a chill lofi vibe. But most of them are literally soundcloud rappers. Most 2014-2018 EDM songs include an Omen Break, which was introduced in late HipHop tracks in the 1970’s, becoming a perfect break before a drop if the Omen Break was sped up to the respectable tempo.

As time goes on, more aspects from other mainstream, popular genres will mix with this “underdog” of a genre, EDM, and become a norm in society’s music. As some examples, here are some tracks I enjoy that are included in genre mixing:

Turn Up the Music by Franky Nuts, Katie Sky, and Nika D

Hitta by Marshmello, Eptic, and Juicy J

Cooler Than Me by Mike Posner

This Could Be Us by Virtual Riot, Modestep, and Frank Zummo

Empty Bed by Saint Punk

Good 4 Me by Vindata

Can U Feel by Freddie Dredd and Dragg
