Saturday, October 7th, marks the day of Desert Oasis’s homecoming dance.
Homecoming is a formal dance that is held once a year at the beginning of first semester. It’s an event Desert Oasis Diamondbacks look forward to every year as they get to gather with friends, or go with a special plus one to enjoy a fun dance at the school. There’s a lot of work put into dances and events at Desert Oasis, the Student council handles a majority of the work to create these events.
“Every week we have at least 3 workdays, most until 4pm, but some extending till 6pm, so there’s a lot of work in our group, and we have been working nonstop for about 1-2 months. There’s a lot more behind the scenes than you think. Before we even start preparations, our chairs (the people in charge of the event) have to come up with what their event will hold, how they’ll execute it, etc,” said Angelica Bonsol, Desert Oasis STUCO Publicist.
The planning of homecoming starts months in advance to give STUCO time to prepare.
“We actually start at the end of the previous school year picking the theme. After welcome back, which is around September, we start the actual planning and execution of homecoming,” Bonsol stated.
The student body of Desert Oasis also gets to play a small role in the preparation of homecoming. Students get the final say and vote on what the theme will be for the following year’s homecoming dance.
“Our executive board comes up with the themes and then presents them to our student council. Then the top 2 picks are brought to the entire student body for the final vote,” Bonsol said.
During the week before homecoming, there are small events at Desert Oasis to get students excited about the dance later that weekend.
“We have a whole week planned out as usual. We started off with a movie night, then a kickball game, then pep rallies, an assembly, tailgate, a football game, halftime parade, and then, of course, our dance. For more information, please follow @dodbacks on Instagram,” explained Bonsol.
There are also posters hung up around the school to get students excited about homecoming, giving them something to look at when walking in the open hall. Student council puts a lot of effort into the posters so that they don’t disappoint the student body.
“For the first semester, our vice presidents come together and decide that. They do take suggestions from the rest of us, but it’s mostly up to them to figure it out. Some other time, somebody will sign up and be responsible for doing that job,” said Bonsol.
The student council is excited for Desert Oasis Diamondbacks to enjoy these events, along with the actual school dance.
“It’s amazing seeing our dreams come to life and to just be a part of the creation in general, even if it’s small. It’s my 3rd year doing this and every year I learn something more about our student body,” expressed Bonsol.
Ticket prices for homecoming are posted in the cafeteria of the school and are currently available for purchase from a member of STUCO.
