Tuesday, September 19 was the first meeting of Desert Oasis’ new club; the Hispanic club.
Desert Oasis Hispanic club was created to allow students of Hispanic descent to showcase their culture. Students of other ethnicities are all welcome to join the club to learn more about Hispanic culture.
“This club is to educate people about our culture. You don’t necessarily need to be of Hispanic background to join the club, we have a very open and friendly environment,” said Hanna Montes, president of the Hispanic club.
Their first meeting ran for an hour. The board members got to introduce themselves and talk about what they want for the club’s future and their motivation behind creating this club. They also did other activities as well.
“We all got to know each other pretty well, cause you know, you can’t have a club if these kids don’t know their peers or if you don’t get them excited about being where they are and show what they represent.
After about 45 minutes of everyone getting to know one another, we talked about our many ideas for this month. Which everyone will very soon get to see and participate in,” Montes explained.
D.O’s Hispanic club’s motivation behind the club is that they want inclusion within the student body. They also want students to learn more about different Hispanic cultures and learn different traditions, games played, foods/drinks eaten, etc.
“Learning about the culture is much different than actually getting to experience it. We want our students to actively participate in our events or activities simply because we want inclusion more than anything. Participating in events and such will definitely educate you more on where we
come from and who we are,” said Montes.
What made starting this club even more special to them was that they were able to hold their first meeting at the beginning of Hispanic heritage month.
“Having our first meeting during Hispanic heritage month was the best decision our club could’ve made. Considering it is our month, we all have many different ideas flowing through our minds. Having only 11 students as of right now, we don’t have much to work with, but these students are very strong minded and strong willed. We as a club can definitely execute our ideas for the month,” Montes explained.
The Hispanic club meets every Tuesday from 1:20-2:20 pm in room 602. Follow @dohshispanicclub on Instagram for more information and updates on the club.
