The Miami Dolphins defeated the Denver Broncos 70-20 on their Sunday opening home game, making this the second-most scored points by a team in a regular season in NFL history since 1966.
While they had the opportunity to break the record, later in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins decided to opt out of the choice, and backup quarterback Mike White instead took a kneel rather than kicking a field goal. Fans did not enjoy the sight and began booing even as they were exiting the field.
The action was initiated by Mike McDaniel in the post-game interview.
“It would’ve been cool. But what we’re trying to do, I think I’ll be talking from both sides of my mouth if we sent the field goal team on and tried to squeeze an extra three (points). It’s not what I’m about.” McDaniel later stated that he didn’t want to “chase” after points or an NFL record
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 309 yards and scored four touchdowns.
“This doesn’t compare to anything that I’ve seen or been a part of,” Tagovailoa said. “It just talks about the resilience of our team. Although we were up going into halftime, I’m very proud of the guys and the way they continued to play. No one took their foot off the gas, everyone continued to play and that’s the result that we got.” He also added, “We’re not trying to humiliate teams.”
The head coach of the Broncos, Sean Payton described the game as “embarrassing” and “tough to watch.” Even interrupting reporters during the conference when going over the statistics of the historic game.
The Broncos beat the Bears in their Sunday game 31-28. Their next game is Sunday against the Jets.
