All schools in CCSD have police dogs that come into the school for random searches. Desert Oasis High School students and faculty have witnessed numerous random searches that have occurred in the classrooms throughout the school. There are 6 dogs that have been to the school for random searches.
During these random searches, a class is selected and the entire class leaves all bags inside and steps into the hallway. While the class is in the hallway the canine officer, campus police, and the search dogs go into the classroom to search for the contraband.
Kyle Roberts, who is the campus police officer for Desert Oasis High School. Officer Roberts has been campus police for about 6 years overall and this year is his first working at Desert Oasis.
The canine officer that is assigned to the area around Desert Oasis dog is named King who is currently 6 years old. King is the dog that usually does the searches if our school so happens to be selected for a search. King has been working for 4 years and will be retiring in 2-4 more years as he gets older.
Each canine and their handler which are considered one unit complete 2 searches a day at 2 separate schools. It is very rare that the dogs incorrectly sniff out a bag with no contraband in it. As they get older, they may start to make more mistakes.
Students found with contraband do typically get punished depending on the student and what was found. If it is a first time offense that student may get let off with a warning. If that student has been found with contraband frequently depending on the contraband found they may be looking towards an arrest.
