Adam Johnson, 24, died on October 28th, 2023 in a freak accident.
Johnson played for the Pittsburgh Penguins for 2 years, but was currently playing with Nottingham Panthers and happened to be in the middle of a game on Saturday against Sheffield Steelers.
During the second period of the Elite Ice Hockey League game, Johnson got cut in the neck by a skate blade. Johnson was immediately rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.
Condolences have gone out to Johnson’s friends and family.
“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.” says Johnson’s team. “Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.”
The hockey industry has been very open about mourning Johnson as well.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the life of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” the Penguins stated. “We offer our deepest condolences to Adam’s family and friends, as well as all of Adam’s past and present teammates and coaches. Adam will always be part of the Penguins family.”
This tragic accident has hit the hockey world so badly that even our local Golden Knights have reached out and expressed their feelings.
“The Golden Knights join the hockey world in mourning the loss of Adan Johnson. Our thoughts with his loved ones in this unimaginably difficult time.”
Although this tragic accident will forever affect the hockey community, Johnson shouldn’t be remembered from this but his play on the ice. Johnson was second-leading scorer for the American Hockey League in 2017-2018. He made his National Hockey League debut in 2019. Johnson played a total of 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2019-2020 season. During the 2022-2023 season Johnson posted 7 goals and 22 points through 45 regular season games.
Granted, Johnson didn’t get a lot of ice time, the few years he did participate, he definitely left an impact. Not only that, but he showed his worth and ability to prove who he is as a player. Adam Johnson’s legacy will forever live on!
