There’s a new quarterback in town for the Giants, and he’s probably the furthest from what you would expect.
Tommy DeVito now sports a deep blue jersey with the number 15!
The 25-year-old, who was an undrafted rookie until this past weekend, was called to play after both the teams’ starting quarterback and second-string quarterback were placed on injured reserve.
DeVito is of Italian descent and grew up in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Cedar Grove is just outside of the Giants’ home, East Rutherford. He attended the Don Bosco Preparatory High School, a private all-boys Catholic school, which is known for being a powerhouse that has produced 13 NFL players. He earned many accolades during his time at Don Bosco, including being named the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2017. He received offers from the likes of the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers, and even Yale.
DeVito chose to enjoy his successful college career at Syracuse University, playing ball at the school for four years, where he became a starting quarterback as a sophomore. He also spent a year at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign playing as a Fighting Illini where he started all 13 games as quarterback and earned an impressive spot as No. 21 in the nation for passing.
DeVito is catching a lot of attention on social media because of his signature hand gesture, which some have dubbed the “Italian Finger Purse”. DeVito could be seen using the gesture with his new Giants teammates. Even his dad showed off the sign, waving it from the crowd while sitting with the rest of the DeVito family.
DeVito is racking up a large number of fans, and even held a meet and greet with fans at a Wayne, New Jersey sandwich shop; but what’s really catching people’s hearts is the comments DeVito made about living at home.
In an ESPN interview on November 11th, DeVito describes that choosing to live at home was an easy decision, despite the income he’s recently discovered.
“I don’t have to worry about laundry, what I’m eating for dinner, chicken cutlets and all that is waiting for me when I get there. My mom still makes my bed. Everything is handled for me. Honestly, I don’t even know if I could find a place closer to here than where I live. It takes me 12 minutes to get [to Metlife Stadium].”
DeVito has shown himself as not only an up-and-coming yet unexpected star on the field but also as a simple guy with his family in mind, who is ready to enjoy his time in the league!
The next Giants game is set for Monday, December 11 against the Packers at Metlife Stadium, although it is still not known if DeVito will be the starting quarterback for the game.
