How does music affect your mood?

Ajanae Cole, Feature writer

Have you ever wondered how music affects your mood? I personally feel the music you listen to can make or break your day.Well as mentioned in The Impact of Music Therapy on Mental Health. ”While there are benefits to matching music to our mood, it can potentially keep us stuck in a depressive, angry or anxious state. To alter mood states, a music therapist can play music to match the current mood of the person and then slowly shift to a more positive or calm state.”

The music one listens to doesn’t just have to match your “mood” it can also match the “vibe” you want to create. For example if you’re studying good artists to get you in that study mood would be The internet, Tyler the creator and Frank Ocean. The music they make is mainly in the genres R&B and Neo soul. These artists make a good study vibe, but you can still have a clear mind to think while listening.

Music can help let out some of your emotions, sometimes we just get in our “feelz” and need music to match that. Jhené Aiko, Daniel Caesar and Sumer Walker all express a lot of emotion into their songs. A lot of people use music as a form of self care, in fact Jhené Aiko said this in an interview with ELLE “One of my purposes as an artist is to help aid people in the healing process.”

We all need to listen to chill music at times no matter how one feels. Artists that can make you feel like you are in your own little world are Childish Gambino, Erykah Badu and Joey Bada$$. It’s all about the way you want to feel that intense; hear the words, feel the beat, fully immerse that calm state.
